2024 US Flag
• Continues the tradition of patriotic US flag stamps
History the stamp represents: Laura Stutzman has been a popular choice of artist for US flag stamps since 2008. In 2024, she was chosen again for four new designs. Each shows a different gouache painting of Old Glory fluttering in the breeze in front of a brightly colored sky.
Stutzman began her illustration career in the 1980s. She took inspiration from Dean Cornwell and N.C. Wyeth as well as impressionists John Singer Sargent and Frederick Childe Hassam. As time went on, Stutzman received more commissions for artwork picturing the US flag. She said “By the mid-190s, I started to be identified with that topic, which sent more of the same my way.”
It was only natural that the USPS would eventually come to her to work on a flag stamp. Her first project was the 2008 Flags 24/7 designs. In regard to the new challenge, Stutzman said, “The restrictive size of a stamp forces adaptability in both design and technique…. The USPS wants the least amount of ‘abstraction’ possible while still avoiding a flat look and maintaining movement and drama.” After that, she went on to provide artwork for the 2013 Flags For All Seasons, 2022 Flag stamp, and the four 2024 designs.
